Meeting Recap

Greetings Rotarians! We had an action-packed meeting today!  We started things off by recognizing two local high school students who will be heading overseas as part of the Rotary Exchange program.  Elena Kirby from Mount Mansfield Union will be traveling to Barcelona, Spain for the summer and Essex High School student, Katy Trahan will be spending her next school year in Iceland.  We look forward to hearing more from them about their experiences.  We then enjoyed a very special Paul Harris presentation.  Rotarian Dave Barra was recognized for attaining the status of a Paul Harris Plus Two Fellow.  This is awarded to Rotarians who have generously donated at least $3,000.00 to the Rotary Foundation.  Thank you to Dave for his selfless support of this endeavor!  We then inducted another new member into our Club.  Greg Morgan became the newest Essex Rotarian.  Please take the time to welcome Greg and make him feel welcome at our Club.  Today’s speaker was Joe Sinagra from Myers Recycling Center in Colchester.  Myers is well-known for its ubiquitous “red cans”, but what most people don’t know is that they are leading the charge in recovering raw material from construction sites and landfills so that they can be recycled into useable products.  Currently, Myers recovers up to 85% of the raw material value from an average jobsite container of commingled construction and demolition debris.  For more information about this business, please visit its website at www.theredcanfamily.com

Essex Rotary Key Bank All-Star Hockey Classic

We are now in the home stretch for the Hockey Classic, but we still need at least two more volunteers for this event!  We are in dire need of a scorer at the women’s game and a penalty box attendant at the men’s game.  We could also use one more person at the concession stand for the men’s game.  We really need to have these spots filled, so if you haven’t signed up already, please consider helping us out!

District 7850 Rotary Leadership Institute

The District Rotary Leadership Institute is offering leadership courses for anyone who is interested.  The next courses are scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.  Breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks will be included as part of the course and our Club will cover the cost for any Rotarians who would like to attend.  This is a great way to learn about the many functions of Rotary, so newer members are strongly encouraged to attend.  For registration information, please visit

Upcoming Meeting Schedule:  Wednesday, March 12, 2014  - Our speakers will be District Attorney T.J. Donovan and Bill Young who will discuss the opiate addiction epidemic in Vermont.
