Meeting Recap

Greetings fellow Rotarians!  Today we were treated to a performance of the critically acclaimed, one-act play, “Two Ways of Giving” by the Essex Rotary Act One Players.  These classically trained thespians enchanted us with a tale of the Rotary Foundation and the various avenues of giving.  The set design in this production was particularly noteworthy.  The finished product was so realistic that the audience actually believed it was witnessing a group of Rotarians discussing the Rotary Foundation in the Ballroom of The Essex. Through humor and Oscar-caliber acting, the performers did a tremendous job of providing our Club with a history of the Foundation, its purpose, the manner in which it is funded, and the ways Rotarians can contribute to it.

Golf Tournament

The Golf Tournament will take place on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the Links at Lang Farm Golf Course in Essex.  This event is our biggest fundraiser, so it is important that all members pitch in to help out.  Every Rotarian is asked to bring at least one sponsor for the tournament and we would ask that all Rotarians participate on the day of the event by either playing in the tournament or by filling one of the many volunteer spots available.  Brochures for sponsors and players are now available on our website, however, you can also pick some up at our weekly meetings.

Rotary Theme for April

The Rotary theme for the Month of April is “Magazine Month”.  We all receive the Rotary Magazine on a monthly basis but many are not aware of its history.  The first issue of The Rotarian (then known as “The National Rotarian”) was published in January of 1911.  It originally served as a means for Rotary founder, Paul Harris to distribute his monthly essay to Rotarians across the country.  As Rotary grew, so did the distribution and scope of The Rotarian.   This magazine is now published in twenty different languages and is distributed to Rotarians in 130 countries.  The distribution of The Rotarian to so many people is just one of many ways in which Rotary International strives to bridge the physical, linguistic and cultural gaps that exist between Clubs.

School Calendar Information

In response to the many inquiries that Essex Rotarians have had about the proposed new public school calendar, Mike Deweese has provided a link to a website that has a great deal of information about this topic.  Please visit www.schoolcalender2.blogspot.com for more information about some of the ideas that are being presented relative to this matter.

Upcoming Meeting Schedule:  April 24, 2013 – Committee Meetings.
