Meeting Recap

Greetings fellow Rotarians!  Today marked the first official meeting of the 2013-2014 fiscal Rotary year.   Assistant Governor, Earl Wertheim was on hand to present our Club with three awards, one of which was the coveted Presidential Citation.  Our Club earned this award by demonstrating the 2012-2013 Rotary Theme of “peace through service”.  Our speaker for the day was Michael Smith, Vermont State President of Fairpoint Communications.   Mr. Smith had spoken to our Club almost three years ago when Fairpoint and Verizon were in the process of merging, so he took the opportunity to update us on what has transpired since that time.  He was pleased to announce that Fairpoint has achieved its goal of substantially improving the quality of its services, both from a technical and a customer relations standpoint.  Mr. Smith indicated that the greatest challenge faced by his industry is determining the direction in which technology is headed and the new products that will be entering the telecommunications marketplace in the near future.

Rotary Theme for  July

The Rotary theme for the month of July is literacy.  Throughout the month, Rotary clubs across the globe will be reflecting on the manners in which Rotarians can promote literacy.  Our Club in particular has a committee dedicated to this endeavor. This committee has procured picture dictionaries for the local refugee resettlement project and helped support our local libraries.  Rotary International asks that we all take the time to think about literacy and the ways in which we can support this cause on both a global and local level.

Essex Rotary Corn Booth

Believe it or not, fair season is just around the corner, which means it is time to start thinking about the Essex Rotary Corn Booth. Our Club will be selling the freshest corn in the county at the Champlain Valley Fair from August 24th through September 2nd.  All proceeds realized from this event go into our Club’s Charities Fund.  Not only is this event one of our fundraisers, but it is also a great way for our Club to gain exposure in the community.  In order for this event to be a success, we need all of our members to pitch in and volunteer to work shifts.   The more helping hands the better, so please encourage your family members and friends to pitch in as well. More information about the Corn Booth will be available as we draw closer to the event!

Upcoming Meeting Schedule:  Wednesday, July 17th - District Governor, Steve Dates will be on hand to address our Club.
