Meeting Recap
Greetings fellow Rotarians! Today’s speaker was Al Karnatz from the Vermont Land Trust. This non-profit organization was founded in 1977 for the purpose of protecting forest and agricultural lands throughout the state. To date, the Vermont Land Trust has been able to acquire title to or conservation easements on roughly 540,000 acres of land. These parcels include over 700 working farms, thousands of acres of forestland and several parcels that have been set aside for community use. Through its programs, this organization has given many property owners the opportunity to recognize significant property tax benefits by enrolling in this organization’s current use programs. Mr. Karnatz explained that much of Vermont Land Trust’s funding comes from a variety of private donors as well as from private and public organizations that are committed to conserving the natural beauty of our state. District 7850 Benefit Concert
District 7850 is sponsoring a concert by clarinet player, Pietro Tagliaferri and pianist Francesco Attesti. Their performance will feature the works of Saint-Saens, Risinni, Verdi, Landini, Liszt and Poulenc. The concert will start at 7:00pm on Tuesday, September 24th at the McCarthy Arts Center at St. Michael’s College. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for students/children. All proceeds from this event will be donated to assist the victims of the recent tragedy in Lac Megantic, Quebec. Tickets may be ordered at www.flynntix.org or they may be purchased at the door. This is a great opportunity to not only listen to some amazing music but to assist some individuals who are in dire need of aid.
Essex Rotary Service Project
As many of you may recall, our Club participated in the “Feed My Starving Children” effort that was held in Essex Junction last fall. During this event, several Rotarians assisted with the preparation of care packages that were then shipped to people in need across the globe. All who participated indicated that this was a very worthwhile service project. We have the opportunity to take part in this year’s event, which will take place on Friday, October 18th from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the Albert D. Lawton School in Essex Junction. Once again, our Club has made a commitment to provide 30 volunteers for this event. President Marie will present more details at future meetings, but please consider setting aside that afternoon to take part in what should be another memorable and highly rewarding effort.
Upcoming Meeting Schedule: Wednesday, September 18th – Peter Lyon and the International Committee will be delivering a presentation on a proposed project involving Kenya.
