ROTARY CLUB OF ESSEX
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

JULY 30, 2014

Meeting Recap

Greetings Rotarians!  This week’s newsletter is dedicated to providing some information about our charitable committees.  It is our hope that each Rotarian will join a committee that best fits his or her interests.

Local Committee
During the 2013-2014 fiscal year, the Local Committee spend $6,000.00 on local charities.  In addition to $4,500.00 being disbursed to three local food shelves, funds were used to assist individuals and families in Essex, Jericho and Westford who were in immediate need of assistance when it came to things like heating costs.  The committee was also able to donate money to the Five Corners Farmers Market Power of Produce Program and Essex Eats Out community dinners.
Literacy Committee
Last year, this committee donated $3,500.00 towards the effort to rebuild the library that was destroyed in the Lac Megantic, Quebec train explosion of 2013.  The committee has decided to expand its focus on other educational endeavors and disciplines like engineering, financial literacy and the sciences.

National Committee
This committee focuses on matters of national interest. In the past, this committee has provided funds that support military families and relief to communities in the wake of natural disaster that have affected our region.

International Committee
This committee focuses on providing support for international projects. In the past, this committee has helped fund the distribution of portable cook stoves to communities in Kenya, school supplies for an orphanage in Bhutan, and most recently, the purchase of a Rotary ShelterBox that will be deployed to a community in need of disaster and humanitarian relief.
Scholarship Committee
Each year, this committee gives out $6,000.00 in scholarships to students from Essex High School, Mount Mansfield Union and the Center for Technology in Essex.

Youth Services Committee
This committee focuses on connecting young people from the area with Rotary and the community at large.
