ZOOM: Prof. Peter Mires
Growing up in Essex with childhood polio and Western Architecture

Now

Dr. Peter Mires is a longtime friend of Pat Spielman.  He will join us via Zoom from Nevada to share his Vermont experiences.

Peter B. Mires, a native of the Green Mountain State, first came out west in 1990 and has been fascinated with Carson City and neighboring Lake Tahoe ever since. He received his Ph.D. in historical geography from Louisiana State University in 1988 and subsequently taught at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the University of Delaware. His publications include several books and more than fifty scholarly articles, book reviews, and op-ed pieces. Dr. Mires is retired and lives in Carson City, and when not reading or writing he may be found hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail or exploring the Nevada outback.

Comments of Reno, NV Rotary about Peter Mires:

Of particular interest to us Rotarians was Dr. Mires account of his childhood battle with Polio at the age of 1.5 years.  He is a survivor.  He brought his childhood leg brace to show.  It is made of leather and steel and had to be heavy on a child's leg.  He now carries it with him as he hikes the Tahoe Rim Trail to remind him of the first eight years of his life when he could not walk without leg braces.
